Campagna, Italy Area Guide

Southern Italy has eight regions, and Campania is the third largest after the islands of Sicily and Sardinia. Known for its staggering coastlines, vibrant city of Naples, glitzy Amalfi Coast, and sunny Sorrento peninsula, Campania impresses with UNESCO World Heritage sites bursting with historical wonder, endless national parks, and exquisite hillside towns framed by spectacular countryside and mountain ranges. The town of Campagna is one such gem, nestled in the hills and framed by the scenic backdrop of the Picentini mountains. Its tapestry of colors shines through the terracotta roofs and pastel exteriors that look like they’ve been lifted straight from a watercolor painting.

Experience Campagna

Campagna charms with its cobbled streets, historic center, and warm, welcoming community. Relax amidst the sounds of nature, including the meditative sound of the fast-flowing river that dissects the town. Enjoy the waterfall and lagoon pools by taking a beautiful walk alongside the water’s edge.  Enjoy the tranquility of the surrounding countryside or the liveliness of the main piazza. Known as the city of water and fire, Campagna always has something to celebrate throughout the year.

The summer “A Chiena festival” honors the centuries-old tradition where the water from the River Tenza gets temporarily diverted through the town’s streets before rejoining the river once again, avoiding any waste. Today, everyone takes to the streets with buckets, enjoying a welcome cool down from the summer heat while joining in the fun and festivities of this month-long event. In winter, in January, the bonfire “I Fucanoli” celebrates Sant’Antonio Abate with bonfires and processions through the beautiful streets of the historic center. You get to enjoy the incredible flavors and tastes of Southern Italy with food and entertainment against a golden backdrop from the lit fires.

Taste Campagna

No visit to Campagna is complete without experiencing the regional specialties and recipes handed down through generations. Seasonal, simple dishes like the Matasse and Lagane pasta dishes, which you will only find in this region of Italy, served with homegrown chickpeas (ceci), will delight the palate. From rustic cantinas to fine dining, Campagna has a fabulous array of restaurants. Olive oil is taken as seriously as wine and accompanies most dishes.

The delectable antipasto platters feature local cheese alongside an abundant choice of cured meats. Taste the deliciously fresh Buffalo Mozzarella and Caciocavallo, straw-yellow in color with a thin edible rind and distinctive teardrop shape tied at the top. If you have a sweet tooth, the fresh Italian doughnuts, Zeppole, and tempting pastries from the local artisan pastry shops and bakeries are a must-try!
